So, it’s the last bank holiday until Christmas (yes, I mentioned the C word!!) and the weather is going to uncharacteristically HOT HOT HOT!
With this in mind we are determined to squeeze every last drop of summer fun out of this Bank Holiday weekend. For those who are lucky enough to be abroad soaking up the sunshine by the pool, I hope you’re having fun but for the rest of us there are plenty of things happening locally. Why spend your precious Bank holiday stuck in endless traffic jams when we are fortunate to have so much to do on our doorstep.
Here are Emsley Mavor’s 5 top picks to enjoy this sunny Bank Holiday weekend…
Why not take a drive out to Helmsleys open air swimming pool, which by the way is also heated and kept at pretty constant 28 C. Surrounded by stunning scenery you could actually be forgiven for thinking you are swimming in a pool in a village in Tuscany!! There are changing facilities, a shop and play area with a zip wire… an unconventional way to dry off! There’s lots more to see and do in Helmsley so it’s well worth a day out. Plus, Emsley Mavor recommend trying Ryeburn ice cream, it’s the best for miles!
Easingwold’s Maize Maze is a really fun day out. Having young children, it’s been a regular for us every summer and it gets better every year! We always have a small wager to see who can finish the maize first, we’re not a competitive family at all! All the activities are included in the entry fee, so its very good value for money.
Take a scenic drive to The White Horse situated on the edge of the village of Kilburn. There is a leisurely walk (excluding the 156 steps) with beautiful views of the wonderful Yorkshire scenery. There are picnic benches and the ice cream van is always a welcome sight!
Finish any DIY in preparation for selling your home in September (look out for next week’s 5 reasons to sell in September blog). Okay, so this one isn’t such a fun idea but if you are thinking of selling it’s a good thing to get done!! Visit Easingwold’s DIY shop for paints etc.
Finally, everyone loves a BBQ. Why not invite friends and family for a Mediterranean themed BBQ? With temperatures similar to that of the med, what better way to spend an afternoon enjoying Mediterranean food and even a cocktail or two:
BBQ chicken with couscous Greek salad
1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
400g chicken mini fillets
1½ tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
300g vine tomato, roughly chopped
handful pitted black Kalamata olive
1 red onion, finely sliced
100g feta cheese, crumbled
small bunch mint leaves chopped
Mix butter, chilli and garlic into a paste. Toss the chicken fillets in olive oil and into the paste ready for the grill. Cook the couscous. Next, tip the tomatoes, olives, onion, feta and mint into a bowl. Toss in the couscous and stir through some olive oil with lemon juice. Serve with crusty French bread.
To wash it down, a bottle of San Miguel for the boys and for
the ladies a limoncello prosecco
A bottle of prosecco mixed with 175ml of limoncello, served in a long glass over crushed ice, with a slice of lemon, fresh raspberries and some fresh mint! “Cin Cin”
